Exposure to smoke from open firewood which is the primary means of cooking for almost 3 billion people in developing countries causes about 4 million premature deaths annually. In Kenya alone, almost 22,000 deaths occur as a result of the poisoning from open firewood.
The cooking smoke also contributes to a range of chronic illnesses and acute health impacts such as early childhood pneumonia, emphysema, lung cancer, bronchitis, cardiovascular disease, and low birth weight.
Women and young children are the most affected, with close to 5,000 children in Kenya dying every year as a result of acute lower respiratory infections caused by the smoke from the use of solid fuels.
As a result of this, the National Climate Change Action (2018-2022) has recognized clean cooking as a Nexus issue and has included it in government policies and development plan.
As a result of this, Dongruokdala CBO in support of the Clean Cooking Alliance makes clean cookstove at a cost of between Kshs. 250 to Kshs. 3,000 depending on the size.
This holiday season you can buy the small clean cookstove for your mum, aunt or grandmother for only Kshs. 250. You can also have the permanent 2 in 1 clean cookstove installed in her kitchen at only Kshs. 3,000.
To place your order, call Alice on 0706594301 now. The proceeds from the sale of these stoves goes toward supporting free training for needy youths in Tailoring, Computer Skills & Making Clean Cookstoves.
Well wishers can also donate any amount to support Dongruokdala Training Centre which offers free training to empower the unemployed youth in Ugenya Constituency to earn a living and become self sufficient.
